If we remove the “-n” switch from the ISQL command tail, we’ll get line numbering that restarts with each batch.

Maybe MS and Embarcadero are suppressing the line numbering only from the final display.

Consider this:

=========
select – t = getdate()

select t = getdate()
go
go
select t = ge;tdate()
go
========= The following is from ISQL.
1> 2> 3> 4> Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Server NAVINT-DB\RBC, Line 1
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ‘=’.
1> 1> 2> Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Server NAVINT-DB\RBC, Line 1
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ‘tdate’.

Batch Line Error Message

1 1 Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ‘=’.
2 1 Line 1: Incorrect syntax near ‘tdate’.

I really doubt that Query Analyzer is parsing the T-SQL. Some of that stuff is quite hairy, and Query Analyzer is a comparitively thin client.
