I’m glad it helped. Please note it wasn’t MEW what did these funny things but CygWin. MEW uses standard Win32 APIs to access files and as far as I know, it doesn’t play with user rights at all. If other win32 apps didn’t show this behaviour it only means they accessed files different way which didn’t have this side effect.

It isn’t very good idea to use CygWin for user rights management under NT-like OSes. CygWin tries to map UNIX rights to NT ones and it isn’t very successful in most cases. It is because UNIX rights are very limited comparing with NT rights (no wonder if you remember when both were originated). It is always better to use native ways for OS management.
