How are you trying to enter it? It works fine if the file is open in binary, but if it’s open in text mode, MEW uses x255 as a virtual space to expand tabs, so I don’t believe you can enter it explicitly as a text character (this has caused some problems in the past for people trying to use MEW for Cyrillic languages, which use x255 as a valid character).

Also, in earlier versions of ME (I don’t know if this is still true, as I haven’t been editing a lot of raw data the past couple of years) if you used binary mode to enter an x255 immediately following a tab character, it vanished when the file was saved because of its special function as a tab expansion place holder.
